The tutors in the Centre are practitioners from renown international law offices (e.g. Bird&Bird, CMS Cameron McKenna), large Polish law offices (e.g. Kochański & Partners, SPCG, SSW Pragmatic Solution) and boutique law offices (e.g. Czyżewscy Kancelaria Adwokacka [Law Office], Hasik, Rheims & Partners, Kobylańska, Lewoszewski & Mednis, Dr Arkadiusz Michalak Kancelaria Patentowa [Patent Office], Siemiński & Gutowski). The tutors for the business and technological sections are experienced managers from such companies as: Roche, Amazon Web Services, Wirtualna Polska.

 

Dr Arkadiusz Michalak

Legal Counsel, Patent Attorney, European Trade Mark and Design Attorney, graduate and holder of doctorate in law at the Jagiellonian University, with 20 years of experience. He also graduated from schools of American law organised, among others, by Columbia Law School, antitrust law school at Cambridge, Philip Morris International Law University and post-graduate studies at the University of Warsaw in industrial property law. He gained professional experience in the legal department of Philip Morris Polska S.A., Sołtysiński, Kawecki & Szlęzak law office and Synthos S.A., a listed joint-stock company (WIG 20) being one of the largest chemical companies in Poland whose main shareholder is Michał Sołowow (No. 1 on the list of the richest Poles according to Wprost magazine), where Dr Michalak acted as the Head of the Legal Department. He is currently running individual legal counsel and patent attorney practice under the name of Dr Arkadiusz Michalak, Commercial Law and Intellectual Property Law Office. Founder and tutor at the Hugo Grotius Centre of Intellectual Property Rights. Legal expert of the Competition and Consumer Protection Office in the field of implementation of the directive on unfair commercial practices, and participant of the working group on copyright at the Ministry of Culture. Expert in criminal proceedings in the field of copyright infringements. Tutor at the patent attorney legal training, at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków where he runs classes on copyright and WSB University (3rd place among non-public universities in the 2021 Perspektywy University Ranking) where he runs classes for foreign students in “Protection of Industrial Property and Copyright” at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Member of the Programme Council for the reform of patent attorney training, Deputy Chairman of the Commission for patent attorney training, and participant of the convent of stakeholders at the Faculty of Law of the Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski University in Kraków. Judge of the Disciplinary Court of the Polish Chamber of Patent Attorneys. Member of the College of Reviewers of the Legal Monitor (C.H. Beck). Author of a number of publications on copyright, advertisement, trademark law, patent law and combating unfair competition, including the monograph entitled Protection of company secret – civil-law issues (2006), Public interest and its impact on the creation, content and exercise of intellectual property rights (2012), Civil-law liability in the trade in computer software in the era of artificial intelligence (2021), and Commentary to the Act on Combating Unfair Trade Practices (C.H. Beck, 2008), co-author of Commentary to the Act on Combating Unfair Competition (Wolters Kluwer, 2010 and 2016), and editor and co-author of Commentary to Industrial Property Law (C.H. Beck, 2016) and Commentary to the Act on Copyright (C.H. Beck, 2019). Speaker at many conferences and workshops on intellectual property rights and commentator of selected issues related to intellectual property for the media, including Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, Rzeczpospolita, Newsweek, Polsat News, TVN CNBC Business, TVP 3, Wirtualna Polska website, Polish Radio or Infor Radio. Privately, enthusiast of OCR runs, particularly Spartan Race and Runmageddon. Participated, among others, in Spartan Ultra, Spartan Beast (three times), Spartan Super, Spartan Sprint, Runmageddon Hardcore (two times) and Katorżnik (penal servant) Run in Poland and abroad, e.g. in Iceland, Canada, Romania, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
